Round One vs. New England
Inter Miami CF returns to DRV PNK Stadium to face the New England Revolution on Wednesday, July 21 at 7:30pm ET. This will be the first time in Inter Miami history that the two teams will meet. Inter Miami’s previous match-up against the New York Red Bulls on Saturday night was postponed to a future date after inclement weather threatened the area.
Single match tickets for Wednesday's fixture are available here.
Potential Debuts
Following the postponement, the Club’s newest additions - goalkeeper Nick Marsman, defender Kieran Gibbs and attacker Indiana Vassilev - remain eligible to make their Inter Miami debuts. Marsman joined the team after a two-year stint with Dutch club Feyenoord Rotterdam, while Gibbs joined after finishing his four-year stint with English side West Bromwich Albion. Both Marsman and Gibbs have signed with the team through the 2023 MLS season. Recent addition Vassilev joined the team on a season-long loan from Aston Villa.
Familiar Faces
The match may also feature reunions between former teammates or rivals for Inter Miami and New England Revolution players. Notably, Head coach Phil Neville will face former rival Bruce Arena, who was the head coach of the United States Men’s National team during an international friendly in 2005 which featured Neville as a right-back for England.
Reunions may be in the cards for a handful of Argentine players. Inter Miami defenders Leandro González Pírez and Nicolás Figal may face former Argentine Primera División rival Gustavo Bou. LGP has played against Bou four times, while also having been Bou’s teammate during their time playing for Club Atlético River Plate. Figal may face rival Bou, who he played against twice during his stint with Club Atlético Independiente.
Lastly, Inter Miami players may face a familiar MLS rival or former teammate. Midfielder Federico Higuaín shared the pitch with McNamara on several occasions during his time with Columbus Crew. Leandro González Pírez may face him again after playing against him in a series of matches during his tenure with Atlanta United. Inter Miami players may also face former teammate A.J. DeLaGarza who played with the Club during its inaugural season.
New England Revolution's Record
The New England Revolution enter this week’s fixture after a 1-0 victory at Mercedes-Benz Stadium against Atlanta United in their previous game. In 2021, the Revolution have eight wins, three draws and three losses, with Gustavo Bou leading the team with seven goals so far this season.
