Fort Lauderdale CF will travel to Greenville, N.C., to take on Greenville Triumph SC, who they faced in the team’s opening match of the 2020 USL League One Season, on Saturday, August 22 at 7 p.m. ET. The match at Legacy Early College Field will air live on ESPN+.
“We approach every game with a blank mindset and a blank canvas to try to learn. That’s how we approach this game as well,” said manager Jason Kreis. “I’m surprised at how well they’re picking up the tactical things we’re asking, how well they’re applying how we’re trying to play and how well they’re applying how we’re trying to defend...I’m really pleased.”
Fort Lauderdale CF is coming off a 3-2 victory over reigning USL League One Champions North Texas SC at Inter Miami CF Stadium on Aug. 19, extending the Club’s unbeaten run to three matches. The team’s first-ever home win was led by a goal from 15-year-old winger Felipe Valencia, a brace from USL League One leading scorer Ricky Lopez-Espin and two assists from Eduardo Sosa. Valencia’s goal also made history, making him the youngest ever goalscorer at any USL level at 15 years, five months, and 18 days.
Fort Lauderdale and Greenville Triumph SC previously faced off at Inter Miami CF Stadium in the team’s first match of its inaugural season in USL League One; a match in which it fell to a 0-2 loss. The match saw the team grant professional debuts to nine players, including seven Academy products.
In 2019, Greenville Triumph enjoyed a successful season in the team’s first year of existence, finishing third in the USL League One regular season table and going on to finish as runners up. They finished the regular season with a record of 12 wins, seven draws and nine losses before overcoming Lansing Ignite FC in semifinals and falling to North Texas SC in the final.
In the 2020 USL League One Season, Greenville Triumph SC has recorded four wins and one draw, remaining undefeated to date. The team has been led by American forward Jake Keegan who has recorded three goals and two assists so far this season.
