Fort Lauderdale CF will be on the road traveling to the Sunshine States’ neighbor, to take on South Georgia Tormenta FC on Saturday, Aug. 28 at 8 p.m. ET. The match will air live on ESPN+.
“Tormenta is much improved, they’ve made some tactical switches which have been very beneficial to the team. I’m looking forward to playing them again but it’s a very different team than when we played earlier in the year,” said head coach Darren Powell. “I think it’s important that we’re organized with what we’re trying to do with our game plan to match up against a talented and well-coached Tormenta team.”
After a tough 0-4 loss to FC Tucson, Fort Lauderdale CF is on the quest for an away victory to boost the momentum for the remainder of the regular season.
In the first meeting between the clubs last season, Fort Lauderdale CF defeated Tormenta FC 1-2 on the road. On Sept. 19 of the 2020 season, Tormenta FC then defeated Fort Lauderdale CF 1-2 at DRV PNK Stadium.
This will be the second time the two teams play each other in 2021. Fort Lauderdale CF previously opened Tormenta FC’s 2021 season on April 17 at Erk Russell Park, earning the 0-1 win, securing the team’s first victory of the season. The team was able to capitalize early on with a goal from Shaan Hundal, his first of the season. Hundal was assisted by Drew Hardin, also recording his first assist of the season. The previous matchup between the two teams also resulted in Fort Lauderdale CF’s first clean sheet of the season.
Tormenta FC is coming off of a 1-1 draw at home versus New England Revolution II. The recent draw included key contributions from midfielder Luca Mayr-Fälten, who scored a late goal in the 72nd minute, assisted by forward Rodney Michael. The team is also led by goalkeeper, Pablo Jara, who is ranked second in League One with 52 saves, and midfielder Marco Micaletto, who was named to the USL League One’s Cleer Audio Team of the Week last week.
Tormenta FC is one of seven teams tied at 24 points in the League One standings, recording seven wins, 10 losses and three draws. Meanwhile, Fort Lauderdale is looking for a playoff push in the final stretch of the regular season, sitting in 10th place on the standings with six wins, nine losses and four draws for a total of 22 points.
