Inter Miami CF announced today it has signed centerback Christopher McVey from Swedish top flight club IF Elfsborg to a contract running through the 2024 Major League Soccer (MLS) season, with a club option for 2025. The 24-year-old American-Swedish, who can also play as a fullback, bolsters the team’s backline ahead of the 2022 season.
McVey joins the club pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC).
“Christopher is a promising addition at a position of need for us and we’re excited to have him join Inter Miami. He’s a versatile defender with good size who can fill in at a number of positions effectively. He also holds a U.S. passport, so he won’t occupy an international roster slot, which will allow us to have flexibility as we continue to build a competitive roster for the 2022 MLS season,” said Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chris Henderson.
McVey has spent the entirety of his career in Sweden to date, turning out for several categories of IF Elfsborg’s youth ranks since joining the club’s academy in 2009 at the age of 12, including making five UEFA Youth League appearances for the team’s U-19 side, before going on to make his debut for the first team in a Allsvenskan, the Swedish top tier, fixture in October 2017.
The Sparsör, Sweden native of American descent made a total of 42 appearances across all competitions for Elfsborg between 2017 and 2021, gaining valuable experience by playing five UEFA Conference League qualifying matches in the 2021-2022 campaign, netting once and dishing out an assist in the process.
During his tenure at Elfsborg, the central defender was also loaned out to Swedish second division club Dalkurd FF in 2019, making 17 appearances and registering one goal and an assist.
On the international front, McVey has represented the U-17 and U-18 sides of the Swedish National Team.
