Herons from Home: The Pillar of Christian Makoun’s Life, His Mother

Christian Makound and his mother

A mother’s love is sweet, pure, infinite. There are no limits as to what a mother would be willing to do for her children. Christian Makoun, versatile Inter Miami footballer who can play as either a defender or a midfielder, can attest to that, as he owes everything in his life to his mother’s unconditional love.

“My mom has been everything. She’s been a fundamental pillar for my life, for my career, for everything that I am today,” he expressed.

This Mother’s Day, just like many others around the world, during the current pandemic Makoun celebrates his beloved mother from afar, from the comfort of his apartment in Fort Lauderdale.

On Thursday, in a video call with TUDN for a feature to celebrate Mother’s Day, the Venezuelan Inter Miami player received a pleasant surprise. Asked about what his mother means to him, he answered with a plethora of compliments, not knowing that she was tuned into the conversation from Cucuta, Colombia, where she currently lives. Minutes later, his mother, Hayde Reyes, switched on her camera to surprise him and reveal that she had been present throughout the entire call. It was a moving moment. A demonstration of the pure love between a mother and her son.

In the video call, the native of the city of Valencia, the capital of the Carabobo State in Venezuela, shared that, despite coming from humble beginnings, his mother made sure that they were never in need.

“My mom had two jobs, she worked hard to raise my brother and me, to maintain a house where one of my aunts and an uncle lived too,” he explained. “She was the head of the household, she worked hard and I never saw her complain or fight with anybody, she showed us that we had to be hard-working, humble and simple people."

Going back in time, Makoun remembers the foundations of his soccer career and, of course, the role his mother played was essential.

“From a young age, since I was in preschool, I remember my mom would pick me up, would take me to training, would take me to the bathroom and change me into my soccer clothes. She would take me on the bus every day without complaining, without getting annoyed, simply because she saw that I enjoyed it. I liked having a ball, I liked to play and that’s something that I value very much,” he recalled fondly.

“As I grew up, I became aware of all the sacrifices my mom had made since I was little. When I grew up, when I was a teenager, I understood everything my mom did for me. It is something that I will never stop admiring,” he added.

Since then, the 20-year-old footballer embarked on a journey that finally led to him being amongst the ranks at Inter Miami. This Mother’s Day, sending a big virtual kiss, Makoun thanks his mother for all of her work, sacrifice and love, because, without it, he would’ve never become the player he is today, “The Beast” that terrorizes rival offenses.

“My mom is my life because she is able to give hers for mine. She sacrificed her whole life, her youth to raise me and my brother, to always give us the best. That’s why I believe my mom is everything. Without her, I wouldn’t be who I am today and I’m very proud to have her and to be able to give back to her a little of what she has given to me."

“I know that very soon I will have her with me here. I dream of her being there in the stands when I get to play in the team’s stadium and being able to give her joy, being able to hug her and hold her in my arms,” he said.
