Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami today announced it will launch a USL League One team. But what is USL League One?
The United Soccer League (USL) is a North American professional soccer organization founded in 1986 that has brought competitive soccer to more than 100 markets in the U.S. and Canada. USL League One is the third division of the North American professional soccer landscape, with the first division being Major League Soccer (MLS), where Inter Miami’s First Team will play, and the second division being the USL Championship. The USL also operates a pre-professional tournament, USL League Two.
Inter Miami will join FC Dallas, New England Revolution, Orlando City SC, and Toronto FC as MLS clubs who operate teams in USL League One. The league currently has 13 teams; the remaining teams are Chattanooga Red Wolves SC, FC Tucson, Forward Madison FC, Greenville Triumph SC, Lansing Ignite FC, Richmond Kickers, South Georgia Tormenta FC, and Union Omaha SC.
The inaugural USL League One season kicked off in Spring 2019 and consisted of 28 regular season games for each of the 10 existing teams. In the 2019 season each club played eight clubs three times each and one club four times. Currently, only the top four teams make the playoffs; the No. 1 seed hosts the No. 4 seed and the No. 2 seed hosts the No. 3 seed. The winners then face off in the USL League One Final with the higher remaining seed hosting the game.
The official Inter Miami CF League One team name, branding, schedule, roster, and ticket information will all be released at a later date.
