Alvas Powell was the second player selected by Inter Miami CF in the 2019 MLS Expansion Draft. The 25-year-old defender was selected from FC Cincinnati where he spent the 2019 season. He previously played for the Portland Timbers for six years.
"He's a Jamaican international and we really like his game," said Inter Miami CF Sporting Director Paul McDonough. "Athletic, plays at right back so that was important for us."
Powell is a six-foot right back who excels getting up and down the field. He has provided a boost to his previous teams with his goal involvements, registering six goals and 10 assists from his right back position in his MLS career.
The Jamaican was an important member of the Portland Timbers side that won the 2015 MLS Cup. He made 31 regular season appearances and six playoff appearances en route to the title, starting in each one.
Powell has made 49 appearances for the Jamaica National Football Team, appearing at two Gold Cups, two Caribbean Cups and FIFA World Cup qualifiers in two different cycles. He was part of the Jamaican squad that won the 2014 Caribbean Cup. He also appeared across the youth levels and was a member of the Jamaican side that competed at the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
